How To Trade in US Stocks in 2020 For Malaysian

Posted by Kris | Saturday, July 18, 2020 | | 0 comments »

My first post in 2020..lol. Still confinding myself to my own home and avoid going out to crowdy places in the current post recovery Covid19 timeframe. The stock market aka Wall Street is going uptrend while the Main Street is starting to see recessionary effects. (you now can see some of the restaurant and shops never re-open, as the strain of remaining close for the last 2 months or so while needing to sustain business cost such as rental, employee salary is just too overwhelming).

Rubber gloves are soaring to meteoric and dizzying prices :- some roughly 800%-1000% gains making companies such as TopGlove, Supermax, Harta, Kossan gaining additional BILLIONs of their stock market capitalization.

Digressing from the topic,

So how to buy US stocks in Malaysia:

1. Open foreign stock trading account thru our local brokerages: CIMB, Maybank, Ambank, etc.

Pros:
  • You can get 1:1 in person support from remisier or broker representative to answer and questions.

Cons:
  • You need to do the necessary "paper" work. (dont notice any online sign-on)
  • Very high brokerage fees in Malaysia making it not suitable to day trade or buying US stocks in small amount. Roughly >USD25 per trade (regardless of buy and sell)
  • Cannot do short selling (yes, i know most Malaysian will be very happy if we can do the true short-selling and NOT our "fake" BURSA restricted short selling...hahaha or trade in more exotic investments such as options, ETF, forex.
  • No real time stock price feed available
  • Conversion rate from MYR to USD might not be so good. (you first need to convert your money to USD before you can trade US platform. And in some of the local brokers, you might need to convert to some intermediary currency first like SGD.

2. Directly open an international/US stock brokerage account (Etrade, Ameritrade-Schwab, InteractiveBrokers, RobinHood ).  **Unfortunately, Robinhood is not open to non-US residents...

Pros:
  • Everything is done online (KYC, deposit transfer) and in a very speedy manner. And it is easy too. A new account can be opened within just a 3-4 days, provided of course you did your homework and gave them all the necessary legal KYC documents.
  • Brokerage is very very cheap and lower. It can be like around USD1 to USD7 depending on broker.
  • Live feed - depends on platform, either you need to pay or is free. Usually free means higher brokerage fees. (people need to earn money mah! Of course except the innovative "RobinHood". Go google on how they make money thru zero brokerage commissions).
  • Conversion rate is very good in some platform. Note: I only observed a few platforms.
  • Can trade multiple investment instruments: Options, Forex, ETF, etc.

Cons:

  • You might need to do some searching yourself on how to do everything online. Usually, the platform's online chat is very helpful to resolve most of your issues.
  • You might need to overcome your "online" fears whether it is secure or not as most of this platforms are not from Malaysia. Hence always put your money and trade with the well established names like what i described earlier.
So instead of reinventing the wheel:

Here is a good guide by a fellow Malaysian (I assume), Jerry Ng  on the step by step way to open a international/US stock trading account. Credits to him.

ETRADE

Will not go into deeper details on the comparison between Interactive Brokers vs Etrade platform for the time being. If you do have a questions, do feel post in the comments! If i know the answer, i can help to answer, else..it is Mr. Google. :)

Good ideas means easy money will rush in???

Attended a good introductory seminar by SAMENTA on the crowdfunding scheme in Malaysia; particularly crowdfunding for Small & Medium Enterprise (SME).

Previously I read alot of about crowdfunding online and the recent development in Malaysia where the Securities Commission (yes, the same folks over-seeing Bursa Malaysia) have provided a LEGAL framework to legalize and standardize the crowdfunding process.

Hot & Cold Sectorial Play In Bursa Q2 2015

Posted by Kris | Wednesday, April 29, 2015 | , | 0 comments »

This is my personal opinion of which sectors will be hot or cold for Q2 2015

Hot

1) IT company particularly GST counters. (Recurring income from licensing)
2) E-commerce related IT companies - I see new E-malls start to spring up in Malaysia
3) Transportation company. See point (2)
4) Export related company - Earning foreign currency as our Ringgit weakens
5)Semiconductor related which includes tester related companies, OEM component producer, etc

Cold

1) Plantation - CPO prices still very weak
2) Property counters - Loan are harder to get. Not profitable anymore to flip houses
3) REITs - Other than dividend, capital gains were no longer spectacular vs the property boom
4) Companies whose raw material is denominated in USD.
5) O&G related companies - I still think earnings will be weak even though oil prices have started to hover around USD50. Alot of retrenchment happening globally on O&G companies and even scandals start to surface out on O&G companies (Brazil Petrobas)
6) Consumer good companies - GST makes me sad.
7) Precious metal companies. Gold prices still in laggard, so don't put up hopes that prices will reverse upwards , even though there is still gurus out there shouting BUY BUY BUY for GOLD & SILVER.

Paying Money For Stock Picks

Posted by Kris | Monday, April 27, 2015 | , | 0 comments »

Stock club not disco club but both environment can be hot at times

Facebook is a powerful tool for spreading news and info about a new product or services for free. Nowadays, there is alot local stock pick groups mushrooming inside Facebook that requires a certain subscription fee to join.

Below are what these stock pick groups/clubs generally provide at a fee:

1. Watchlist stocks to buy with their buy call price, take profit price and cut-loss point.
2. Some groups provide daily, weekly or even monthly buy calls

3. Some groups based their call on either fundamental analysis, technical analysis or even a mixture of them. P.S I heard some investment course even promotes their stock picks based on Fengshui.

4. Some groups are exclusively limited to investment/stock-based seminar/course students. P.S Usually these course are not cheap also ranging from RM2000 to RM8000. The highest I know so far in Malaysia is a whooping RM24,000!! Those long enough in the investment community will know which group I am referring to.

The cost:

It can range from RM50 to RM100 averagely per month depending on which group.

Well, this post is not to discourage or encourage readers to join such groups to grow wealth thru the stock market.

But in my opinion, it is better to learn how to fish rather than depending on people to give you the fish!

Unit Trust Misconceptions

Nice Tatoo
Last few weeks, I accompany my friend to talk to a unit trust personnel at a local bank after she found out that my friend's account has been idling for some time and wanted to recommend new unit trusts to invest in.

The agent was a very young and pretty girl, heck all her fellow colleagues have considerable beauty.

I saw the name card and I was shock: Wow..manager at such a young age!

Nor is,

"Will you be my girlfriend?"

So what is the pressing question that I was curious about to know from my female friends....

Show Me The Money
As I mentioned before , I always get calls from multiple banks wanting to loan me money and sometime coincidentally, one call after another. Sometimes, I think they must be colluding with each other to keep on calling me.

Usually, I will just ignore them and say that I am busy and not interested. But last Thursday,I just decided to be polite and hear the sales agent out. Usually, I will reject them and put down my phone.

RM299,000 Medium Cost Condominium In Penang Island On Prime Location

Posted by Kris | Thursday, May 29, 2014 | , | 8 comments »

Tri Pinnacle
Tri Pinnacle

This has been a HOT topic among Penangites that wish to own their 1st home. It is affordable housing at RM300K located at the prime location on land limited Island (Tanjung Tokong)!! This is the initiative by the Penang Government.

At RM300K on the Penang Island itself is a rare find these days!! Especially at Tanjung Tokong. However, this being a affordable housing scheme, it comes with restrictions, where I believe you cannot sell this property within 10 years and also if you sell it , you must sell only to eligible buyers that seek affordable housing (hence don't think of it as a house flipping opportunity).  Just have a look at this webpage http://erumah.penang.gov.my/layoutsyaratMM.php

Nevertheless, this is a good opportunity to buy and own your first property at affordable prices, provided of course that you are eligble.

Good Will Hunting!!

GEORGE TOWN: Penang’s home-grown developer, Aspen Group and Malaysia Building Society Berhad (MBSB) today entered into a historic agreement of Islamic financial facilities to fund the state’s first privately initiated affordable housing project located on prime freehold land at Tanjung Tokong.

The Tri Pinnacle project, which is endorsed by the State Government and will be open only to buyers registered and approved by the State’s Affordable Housing Department, consists of 390 units of 650 square feet low medium cost apartments priced at RM72,500 each and 859 units of 800 square feet affordable condominiums priced at RM299,000 each.

Aspen Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Murly Manokharan and Malaysia Building Society Berhad (MBSB)’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Ahmad Zaini Othman inked the agreement of Islamic financial facilities worth RM95.5 million and witnessed by Dato’ Seri Nazir Ariff, Chairman and Executive Director of Aspen Group and Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali, Chairman of MBSB.

The Islamic financing facilities provided by MBSB to Aspen Group include Islamic Term Financing and Islamic Bridging Financing. The purpose of these facilities is to defray the purchase price of freehold land measuring 9.97 acres at Mount Erskine, Tanjung Tokong, the development construction cost for affordable condominiums and low medium cost apartments.

Tri Pinnacle, expected to commence construction in the third quarter of this year, will take 36 months to complete. Since it is a private affordable housing project, the developer owns the sole control in areas such as development concept, layout plan and building materials.

“As a new player in the property development industry, Aspen’s vision is to provide affordable, quality homes for all Malaysians. Aspen Group is the first private developer in Penang to initiate such a project and we are proud to contribute significantly in meeting the people’s needs for affordable housing.

”The supports from the government has been overwhelmingly positive and helped us to realize our vision to bring quality modern homes for all Malaysian,” said Dato’ Murly Manokharan during the signing ceremony.

Aspen promises to build and create a sustainable environment for its purchasers and the developer will not cut any of the construction costs while undertaking the project. “The affordable condominiums will be equipped with facilities commonly provided by existing high-rise residential properties,” Dato’ Murly emphasized.

“This collaboration not only enable us to be part of this vibrant project but also contribute to Penang’s property sector. Other than providing financing facilities to Aspen Group, we will also extend an attractive end financing package to its home buyers,” said Dato’ Ahmad Zaini Othman, President and CEO of MBSB.

He added, “At present, MBSB have managed several numbers of property development projects in the island through our contract financing, bridging projects, as well as structured financing initiatives. MBSB’s recent endeavours in Penang include mixed development of residential condominium and commercial properties.”

MBSB has launched new home financing campaigns notably “Special Rate” package and “My First Home Buyer Scheme” uniquely designed for first home buyers. These initiatives are definitely in support towards promoting home ownership in Malaysia.

Building affordable homes on private land is a win-win solution for all parties - eligible homeowners can purchase their dream homes at a reasonable price, private land owners can sell their land and contribute to the community. The State Government, through such Scheme, can meet and fulfil its people’s housing needs.

The Penang State Government, through its Housing Department, will play a primary role in ensuring only genuinely deserving applicants are entitled to purchase the houses. The involvement of the State Government will help to expedite the approval process of qualified buyers while preventing property speculation.

Aspen Group will assist aspiring first-time buyers in submitting their registration forms to the State’s Housing Department in Komtar. Interested members of the public can register at Aspen’s website, www.aspen.com.my or its Facebook page,www.facebook.com/myaspengroup. The eligibility criteria is bound by the conditions, requirements and regulations stipulated by the Penang State Government. The public is encouraged to log in to http://erumah.penang.gov.my/ to understand the stipulated requirements and regulations.

Aspen Group is currently working on several development projects with an estimated GDV of RM2.1 billion. These projects include Tri Pinnacle in Tanjung Tokong, Beacon in Sungai Pinang, HH Residence in Tanjung Bungah, the first phase of Aspen Vision City in Batu Kawan and the first Ikea Store outside Kuala Lumpur, with some targeted for completion within the next five years.
