DOW JONES dropped -1000 points last week
With 2016 U.S Presidential election coming soon, i don't expect it is going to end very badly for US stock market for the time being, unless Miss Yellen increases interest rate suddenly out of the blue.

China Hell
Today the China market tank big time , impacting HK and the rest of Asian. Read that 40% of companies halted trading..Wow.
The China government cut interest rates and reserve rate to counter this panic selling but it did not work?
Perhaps banning short selling will work? I think during 2009, there was a ban on short selling in some countries.. forgetten which country though.
Where in Bursa KLCI, most stocks are bleeding again..It has been 11 weeks of downtrend for KLCI. The only super active and high volume stocks are China & KLCI warrants especially puts. Saw today one of the China puts gained 130%!!! in a single day. One China put warrant even reached limit up. Last few days, the China call warrants also undergo a rough bungee jump: up and down rapidly with double digit gain/losses in alternate days.
Margin calls are surely impacting China investors and spooking them off. I just saw in the news just now, the reporters are interviewing old uncle and aunties dabbling in stocks and talking in some strange chinese dialects (shanghainese?). I hope they don't lose too much though.

Hole opening up
Here comes the roller coaster ride to the stock market abyss. Still the time to buy bargains though.
Greece likely to default and exit Euro.. Very damn high chances as the government IMHO don't want to do the unpopular thing that is to cut down all the social spending that is burdening the full blown depressionist economy. No way out for Greece, they really need to bite the bullet.

Bleed
Today (Monday, wanted to post yesterday night but somehow blogger.com's server was un-reachable halfway writing and this post was stuck in draft) is one of the worst day for KLCI. Alot of stocks suddenly plunged 7% to 25% especially those with high volume.
The notorious list as shown below. Lazy to bring up the charts:

Hot & Cold Sectorial Play In Bursa Q2 2015
Posted by Kris | Wednesday, April 29, 2015 | Knowledge is Power, Stocks | 0 comments »
This is my personal opinion of which sectors will be hot or cold for Q2 2015
Hot
1) IT company particularly GST counters. (Recurring income from licensing)
2) E-commerce related IT companies - I see new E-malls start to spring up in Malaysia
3) Transportation company. See point (2)
4) Export related company - Earning foreign currency as our Ringgit weakens
5)Semiconductor related which includes tester related companies, OEM component producer, etc
Cold
1) Plantation - CPO prices still very weak
2) Property counters - Loan are harder to get. Not profitable anymore to flip houses
3) REITs - Other than dividend, capital gains were no longer spectacular vs the property boom
4) Companies whose raw material is denominated in USD.
5) O&G related companies - I still think earnings will be weak even though oil prices have started to hover around USD50. Alot of retrenchment happening globally on O&G companies and even scandals start to surface out on O&G companies (Brazil Petrobas)
6) Consumer good companies - GST makes me sad.
7) Precious metal companies. Gold prices still in laggard, so don't put up hopes that prices will reverse upwards , even though there is still gurus out there shouting BUY BUY BUY for GOLD & SILVER.

Paying Money For Stock Picks

Stock club not disco club but both environment can be hot at times
Facebook is a powerful tool for spreading news and info about a new product or services for free. Nowadays, there is alot local stock pick groups mushrooming inside Facebook that requires a certain subscription fee to join.
Below are what these stock pick groups/clubs generally provide at a fee:
1. Watchlist stocks to buy with their buy call price, take profit price and cut-loss point.
2. Some groups provide daily, weekly or even monthly buy calls
3. Some groups based their call on either fundamental analysis, technical analysis or even a mixture of them. P.S I heard some investment course even promotes their stock picks based on Fengshui.
4. Some groups are exclusively limited to investment/stock-based seminar/course students. P.S Usually these course are not cheap also ranging from RM2000 to RM8000. The highest I know so far in Malaysia is a whooping RM24,000!! Those long enough in the investment community will know which group I am referring to.
The cost:
It can range from RM50 to RM100 averagely per month depending on which group.
Well, this post is not to discourage or encourage readers to join such groups to grow wealth thru the stock market.
But in my opinion, it is better to learn how to fish rather than depending on people to give you the fish!

Big Boys
Just attended Maybank's stock overview a few days ago for 2015, following my friend. Maybank's talk is always interesting. They usually paired the talks with local KLSE outlook with some foreign ones (to promote their cross-border trading accounts aka trading global equities). This 1H 2015 the focus was on China & Hong Kong stocks. Btw, the Shanghai Index is performing spectacularly this few months, up ~50%. Last half-year ago, it was Thailand.

Revisiting The Gold Bug

Gold DownTrending
With Dow Jones and the US markets breaking new highs, commodities especially gold is clearly losing its sparkle. With the US ending its QE3, it further puts pressure into gold as a safe haven.
From the above chart since 2012, gold has been a downtrend and it is still continues on a downtrend with no sign of reversal!!

While October is when people are celebrating and drinking merrily during OctoberFest, the stock market is bleeding like crazy.
The reason given by the media is the end of QE3, the longest and largest of the QE. This sparked a huge Dow Jones selldown. Meanwhile the political demonstration at Hong Kong is getting crazier day by day. The tension is brewing waiting for an explosive end.

Dividend
So most people will ask when is the last date you can buy a stock and also enjoy the dividend that comes with it? Usually the dividend announcement comes with 3 dates. See example below on the recent dividend payout by L&G (Land & General) , a property developer that for the 1st time in many years (after successfully business turnaround) started to distribute dividends to shareholder.
L&G - NOTICE OF BOOK CLOSURE
LAND & GENERAL BERHAD
LISTING'S CIRCULAR NO. L/Q : 71404 OF 2014
Single Tier Final Dividend of 2.0 sen per ordinary share of RM0.20 each.
Kindly be advised of the following :
1) The above Company's securities will be traded and quoted [ "Ex - Dividend" ]
as from : [ 23 September 2014 ]
2) The last date of lodgement : [ 25 September 2014 ]
3) Date Payable : [ 16 October 2014 ]
1) Ex- Dividend Date
Means the date that the stock price will be adjusted after the dividend is paid out. Yes, the price will DROP. This is some very expected. See here for some funny fallacy that I encountered recently this year by a unit trust agent. http://www.knowthymoney.com/2014/08/unit-trust-misconceptions.html
AND to get the dividend, you must buy/hold the stock until the last trading hour of the day before the ex-dividend. Example, if i buy the stock on 22 Sept 2014 at 4.59.59pm, I still able to get the dividend.
And on the Ex-Date itself, 23 September I can start selling the stock and STILL get the dividend.
It is very easy and common sense also to determine the expected opening value of the stock price after the Ex-date.
For this example, L&G price closed at RM0.66 on 22 September. And the opening price on Ex-date aka 23 September will be RM0.66 - RM0.02 (dividend payout) = RM0.64. Simple right?
2) Lodgement Date
This is just a formality. It not important to determine when is the last date you must buy/hold a stock to ensure you get the dividend.
3) Date Payable
This is the date that the dividend or $$$ will be paid to you. You get the dividend in terms of a cheque (used to be in the past) or directly banked into your stock trading account. My broker help me setup everything for my latest trading account. See here for the Edividend details.
And because the dividend is single-tiered (as most dividends do now), the dividend attributed to shareholder (aka me in this case) is not taxable. This simplifies things, as I no longer need to claim back the dividend taxes thru income tax filing.
I find it a hassle to claim back dividends in the past due to the fact that you need to do proper book-keeping record of the dividend vouchers/statements. (at least for 7 years, least you got 'lucky picked' for tax audit!!! yikes!. See here)
How much you will get:
In L&G's case, for every 1000 unit of share, you will get 1000 x 0.02 = RM20 of dividend.
There are reasons why I opened a new trading account. Maybe I will explain in the next coming posts.
