Correction: Not 5% out of 5000. But in fact 5000 people after I recheck some other source. Seems the article below from The Star is a little bit misleading.

GEORGE TOWN: Up to 5% of the 5,000 employees of computer maker Dell here have been offered a voluntary separation scheme (VSS).

A spokesman for the com pany said employees in Penang and Cyberjaya had been informed on Wednesday of the plan by the human resource department.

“The employees will be given sufficient time to take up the scheme,” he said, when contacted yesterday.

Dell has manufacturing facilities in Bayan Lepas and Bukit Tengah in Penang, and a business centre in Cyberjaya, which is a sister operation to a Dell centre at the company’s global headquarters in Round Rock, Texas.

The spokesman described the number of employees involved in the scheme as “small”.

He added that the scheme would leave no significant impact on its local operations.

“No operations are being shut down,” said the spokesman.

A Dell employee in Bayan Lepas, who wished to be known only as Chong, said they received a global message from the company on the offer.

“Those of us who were interested in the scheme were given a deadline – until the end of March,” she said.

Penang MTUC secretary K. Veeriah said he was made to understand that the package offered was quite lucrative compared with that of other employers thus far.

At a separate function yesterday, InvestPenang executive committee chairman Datuk Lee Kah Choon said he was informed of the situation in Dell since the state’s Career Assis tance and Training (CAT) was close to certain factories.

“If we look at it legally, the terms for those retrenched are clearly stated in the Employment Act and it is different when it comes to voluntary separation schemes,” he told reporters at the CAT centre located above the Komtar post office yesterday.
